MOI Qatar Traffic Violation Points System 

As well as regular fines for traffic violations, Qatar’s Traffic Department uses demerit points to evaluate drivers’ behavior and emphasize violations that are dangerous.

If a driver commits a serious violation, he or she will receive demerit points (also called black points). For Example, The penalty for crossing a red light is QR 6,000 and 7 demerit points. 

Upon reaching a certain number of demerit points over time, the driver’s license will be suspended or even revoked for repeat offenses. Listed below are the stages of legal action:

How To Remove Demerit Points?

The demerit points will be removed automatically in the following cases: 

  • If the license is canceled based on the above-mentioned points system.
  • Or if the driver did not commit any other traffic violation within one year from the date of the last violation. 

MOI Qatar Traffic Violation Fines Related To Speed 

Overspeeding penalties are based on how many kilometers you allegedly traveled over the speed limit under Article 53 of the Traffic Law. Speeding fines range from QR 500 to QR 1000. One point is given to drivers who exceed the limit by up to 30 km/hr, while two, three, or four points are given to drivers who exceed the limit by more than 40, 50, and 60 km/hr.

3.If the motorist does not control and adjust vehicle speed according to the road conditions, the vehicle’s condition, and its load and weather, that will help to stop or reduce speed.300 QRNIL
4.Too slowly driving a vehicle, regardless of road conditions, vehicle condition, load, or weather, in a manner that hinders the normal movement of other vehicles, unless there are reasonable reasons for this.300-500 QRNIL
5.Applying the brake suddenly without an emergency is required to ensure the safety and security of the traffic on the road.300 QRNIL
6.Not giving a clear indication in advance (turn signal) and enough time when going to slow down the speed of the vehicle.300 QRNIL

Using the leftmost lane is considered the fast track, and motorists are not allowed to drive below a certain speed. According to a senior traffic official, driving slowly in the fast lane without giving way to others is also a traffic violation which is a fine of QR 500.

MOI Qatar Traffic Violation Fines Related To Driving 

Drivers are advised to stay in their designated lanes and not to use parts of the road where traffic is moving in the opposite direction. It is a serious offense to drive in the opposite (wrong) direction, punishable with QR 6000 and 6 demerit points.

MOI Qatar Traffic Violation Fines Related To Intersections 

The act of jumping a red signal can be extremely dangerous, but it will also result in a heavy fine (QR 6000) and 7 demerit points on your license. Not abiding by manual signals activated by traffic police is also a serious offense.

Additionally, there are violations involving not wearing seat belts, using mobile phones while driving, and not giving adequate signals (indicator lights).

MOI Qatar Traffic Violation Fines Related To Emergency Vehicles 

In Qatar, the Ministry of Interior (M01) has always encouraged motorists to move their cars to make way for emergency vehicles. As well as not following the emergency vehicle, take advantage of its clear path.

MOI Qatar Traffic Violation Fines Related To Motorcycles or Bicycles 

The same road traffic rules apply to motorcyclists and bicyclists as they do to larger vehicles. Additionally, they are required to wear helmets and follow the proper lanes. Due to an increase in two-wheeler accidents, Qatar’s MDI is actively promoting awareness among motorcyclists.

6.Driving motorcycles or bicycles on the road between sunset and sunrise or when the vision is poor due to weather conditions during the daytime without using the following lights: 
a. The front light, backlight, and side light. 
b. The reflector on the back side of the bicycle.

Fines Related To Driving License 

Motor vehicles may not be driven on the road without a license issued by the Licensing Authority allowing the holder to drive such a vehicle, according to Article 29 of the Traffic Law. If convicted, the punishment is a minimum of one month’s imprisonment, a maximum of three years, and/or a minimum fine of QR 10,000 and a maximum of QR 50,000. The motorist is also responsible for producing the license when asked by the police.

Fines Related To Vehicle Registration 

If you own a vehicle in Qatar, you are required to register it to legally drive. Driving a non-registered vehicle can get a fine of QR 3000 and 2 points. Renewal of vehicle registration (istimara) and the required technical inspection (fahes) are also important.

Fines Related To Number Plates 

It is the State’s responsibility to issue license plates unless otherwise stated by law. If you drive without a number plate, you will be penalized with QR 3000 and 3 points.

The Traffic Department must be notified immediately if a vehicle’s license plate is lost or damaged. If you lose or damage something outside of Qatar, you should report it to the nearest Qatari diplomatic mission.

Fines Related To Vehicle Body 

Making changes to the body of a vehicle without permission is illegal in Qatar. Driving a vehicle that makes noise or pollutes the environment is also illegal.

Fines Related To Vehicle Horn 

All vehicles in Qatar are required to have horns in working conditions, but honking near hospitals, schools, and other public places is prohibited.

Fines Related To Vehicle Lights 

An offense for using a high-beam or fog light in the front or rear of the vehicle (except in weather conditions that require it) is QR 500 and 1 point

Fines Related To Vehicle Loads

d. Abiding by traffic signals and rules.

Qatari law imposes a fine of QR 6000 and 7 demerit points for crossing a red light.
